Stress and Anxiety

Stress Management and You

During stressful experiences of shock or perceived threat, your brain quickly releases a stress hormone, called cortisol. This can cause your heart rate to increase and blood pressure to rise, delivering more oxygen and blood sugar to power important muscles – we call “fight, flight” mode. While we don’t often encounter life-threatening situations our everyday stresses like meeting a work deadline, juggling children, or having financial issues cause our bodies to panic – causing anxiety.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, the body’s automatic fight-or-flight response that is triggered when there is a feeling of being threatened, under pressure, or is facing a challenging situation.

It is a feeling of uneasiness and fear that may cause one to sweat, feel tense, and experience a rapid heartbeat.  Anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  It can also help you to stay alert and focused, and motivate you to solve problems.

Hypnotherapy is a complementary treatment to cognitive behavioral therapy. A hypnotic induction would help put you into this relaxed state so you can address feelings of panic, anxieties, and phobias.

Even though hypnotherapy isn’t as widely known as psychotherapy and medication for treating anxiety, researchers and scientists have been studying the effects it can help on mental health conditions such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression for several years.

Let’s say you have a fear of flying or heights. During a hypnotherapy session, you are given what’s known as a “posthypnotic suggestion” while you’re in a state of trance.   During this dreamlike state, your mind becomes more open to suggestions, allowing me to suggest to you how easily confident you will be the next time you are at higher elevations, in an elevator, or sitting on a plane.

Hypnosis helps individuals with anxiety because it can take them into a relaxed and calm state.

In a 2016 study, scientists scanned the brains of 57 people in hypnosis. They found changes in the areas of the brain that allowed for greater emotional control and reduced surges of anxiety.

One 2017 review Trusted Source found that hypnosis has a significant, immediate, and prolonged effect on anxiety in people with cancer and childbirth. It was especially beneficial for those taking a test and procedure-related anxiety.

Because of the relaxed state you’re in, it’s easier to calm yourself when you feel anxiety symptoms, such as:

  • a feeling of impending doom
  • shortness of breath
  • increased heart rate
  • muscle tension
  • irritability
  • nervous stomach

However, if you only use hypnosis to treat your anxiety, it could have effects like those of meditation.
