Spring forward – time to reflect upon your femininity.
Do words linger in the back of your mind and pop-up at the most unexpected times?

When you were young, what kind of memorable words of encouragement or discouragement did you receive from your parents? Did those words stick with you past childhood? Have you become a certain kind of adult because of what you believed your parents wanted you to be, or believed you were? The parental voice is a powerful thing – one we internalize because it holds so much control over us as children. It’s hard to step out of the expectations that our parents created for us, and we often translate those expectations into adulthood. Parents may use language that, far from encouragement, make us self-conscious or sensitive and turn us on the way to overcompensation or self-denial.

Femininity is something that is discouraged in boys because it is commonly thought of as a weakness – but girls can be dissuaded from channeling their femininity as well. Maybe your mother wanted you to know that you were a strong woman capable of anything, but equated strength with male characteristics. After all, the world is dominated by men, and their power appears to be directly attributed to their gender.  Or perhaps you looked up to your father‘s respect and approval so much that you still strive for it unconsciously. The male gender wrought opportunity in a time of inequality, and established a belief that should women choose to achieve equal power, they ought to be more like men. This inherently implies that women are not good or strong enough. But if women aim for power, should they be striving to mimic maleness? Or can they redefine what it means to be strong on their own terms?

The opposite of femininity is power. Is that true? Is that true to you?

Femininity need not be associated with weakness or being second-best. If you are actively denying the feminine energy and sensuality that exists within you as a woman, then you are denying a part of yourself. The inner-child or inner-self needs your approval more than you think.  Why mimic someone else’s actions? Your particular talents and idiosyncrasies, and your female traits – whether you are “feminine” or not -needs to be celebrated.  Tap within and discover more about your inner-self as a source of strength and inner power.

Take this time to think about the assumptions people have made about you, or for you, because of your gender or looks. Then think about your own assumptions and insecurities. Do they belong there? Do they make sense? Are they setting you on the path to greatness, or have you set self imposed limitations in trying to be someone that you’re not? Is it okay to be yourself?
